Eleven wedding themes, and how to make the stationery match
In short
A wedding theme is a set of consistent decisions about typography, colour, texture and imagery. On stationery, the theme is carried mostly by the typeface and the paper — the illustration is the last 20 per cent, not the first.
- Paper Meadows prints eleven design ranges and more than forty designs, and every design runs across the whole suite from save the dates to table plans.
- Typography sets a theme faster than illustration: a high-contrast serif reads traditional, a geometric sans reads modern, a brush script reads relaxed.
- Texture is a theme signal too — felt-marked and kraft stocks read rustic and natural, smooth bright white reads formal and contemporary.
- Pick the theme before the save the date, because the save the date sets guests' expectations twelve months out.
"Theme" does not have to mean a costume. In practice it means that everything a guest sees — the invitation, the signage, the table plan, the menu — looks like it came from the same decision-making. Here is how each of our ranges behaves in print, and what tends to pair well with it.

Three decisions that carry a theme
1. Typeface
Guests read the type before they look at the artwork. A high-contrast serif such as our Evelyn Serif design signals formality; a loose brush script signals a relaxed day. Keep it to two typefaces across the whole suite — one for names and headings, one for detail.
2. Paper and texture
Texture is felt before it is seen. A felt-marked or kraft sheet tells a guest "barn, garden, informal" the moment they open the envelope. A smooth, heavy bright white says "city, evening, formal". This is why we recommend ordering a sample pack even when you already know the design you want.
3. Consistency across the suite
- Save the date — sets the theme, 9 to 12 months ahead.
- Invitation and detail cards — the full statement of the theme, 3 to 4 months ahead.
- On-the-day pieces (order of service, menus, place cards) — the same design, scaled down.
- Signage and table plans — the same design, scaled up, usually on foamex or acrylic.
If none of the ranges is quite right
Two options. We can design something entirely bespoke to your venue, flowers or a piece of family history; or you can supply your own artwork — from your own designer, an illustrator or an Etsy template — and we will print and finish it on any of our stocks.
Common questions
How many wedding themes do you offer?
Eleven design ranges — Floral, Art Deco, Bohemian, Destination, Fun, Minimalist, Modern, Rustic, Traditional, Vintage and Winter — covering more than forty individual designs.
Can I mix designs from different ranges?
We would rather you did not mix designs within one suite, because the suite stops reading as a set. If you want a change of pace for the evening stationery, keep the typeface and colour and change the illustration only — just ask us on your proof.
Can you design something bespoke?
Yes. We offer bespoke design by the Paper Meadows studio, and we will also print artwork you supply yourself on any of our paper stocks.
When should the theme be decided?
Before the save the date goes out, usually 9 to 12 months before the wedding, because that piece sets guests' expectations for everything that follows.
